my sister in law carries the attitude that this is to be questioned and was so skeptical of me when i finally told her about the diagnosis . i really never want to talk to her again. this is the epitomy of her selfishness. anyone ever experience isolation ?

Hi Wind,

Sorry to hear that. It's always very sad. Unfortunately family are some of the hardest to get thru to, and the biggest offenders.

You might look thru our thread on family support [or lack there of]. It might help knowing that you're not alone.

We have to deal with skeptics almost on a daily basis. All we can do is hold our ground, take our condition seriously and give it the respect it deserves. All we can hope for is that the skeptics will see that this is important to us and follow suit.

Hang in there!

My dad, my sister, and I are all gluten free. My brother thinks all we need is a heaping bowl of his homemade barley soup and we will be just fine. He refuses to believe that gluten intolerance is real. I hope it never effects anyone in his immediate family, his grandkids or kids! Since I am double DQ1, then the odds are he also has a DQ1 gene!

I agree with you in that I hope no one in his family develops CD or GI. I just want to clarify that even though one might carry one of the genes it doesn't mean that they'll develop CD or GI.

Yup, my mom would constantly complain about digestive issues for years, but refused to ask her doc to test her for celiac. Only when her doctor suggested it did she even mention I am gluten intolerant. Rolling Eyes

My extended family is far enough away I don't really deal with them. When my grandparents visit we go to outback. Same quality and price as other steak houses but they don't have to worry about me sitting there with a salad with no dressing staring at their steak.

My boyfriend's family is much better than mine. His mom bought me a bunch of gluten free stuff when I visited. Very Happy

You learn to adapt. For me it's been making a lot of more exotic naturally gluten free stuff. Risotto, sushi, and probably later this week I'll be making some carolina 'cue onigiri. I'll put things like hotdogs in summer rolls too, I honestly like it better than when I could eat buns because now I can have some tomato and lettuce with my hotdog. Smile

I know this fact, that's why I say I hope his immediate family never has to deal with it, I wish my kids didn't have too. Sadly, I know that all of them have some issues, and only one really wants to find out. He is running into trouble getting his doctors to agree with him. He has state ins for now and really has to go by what the doctors think.
