Hello,
Ever since my sister was diagnosed with CD, I have done nothing but gather info about it. I too think I may have CD, but I am debating on how to go about finding out.

However, I would like to know if I carry the gene for CD for my children's sake. If I do, then I will have them tested.

My questions: My 10 yr. old DD has an itchy slightly raised rash on her trunk, and upper/lower extremities. She has had it forever it seems. It is not DH. I had eczema has a child, but this is not what my DD has.

My son has a terrible time with canker sores. He has had them for several years now. Of course that does not mean he has CD, but I have learned that people with CD can have this problem.

I would have never thought of my children having CD, but now that my sister has it, and I have had symptoms for years, I am begining to wonder.

Do any of you out there have skin issues that are not DH with CD?? Any thoughts would be great Smile

Just out of curiosity, how do you know what your daughter has isn't DH? Have you been to a dermatologist (or regular doc)?

Ostrich,
No I have taken her to a derm, but from what little I do know about DH, it does not look like it. Our Dr. has mentioned my daughter's skin to me in the past, but never has he seemed too concerned. He just tells me to keep in hydrated. Confused

I get "skin issues" when ingest gluten. They don't look like DH. In fact, nobody knows what it is. My dermatologist gave it a tentative eczema diagnosis. This thread might give you some ideas as to how to stop the itching.

Have you thought about getting tested? If so you might want to check out the information here.

I get a rash sometimes when I ingest gluten, heck, right now I have it on my right calf! About 2 years ago I had it all over my body, just as I finally made a dermatologist appointment, it went away (naturally Laughing ). But a derm can scrape the rash and come back with either a YES or NO for DH. It isn't a test that hurt. I also get sores in my mouth when I ingest gluten. Used to get them almost immediately when I had gluten (which was nice, I could pinpoint the problem easily).

Not sure this helps, but I think testing for you and your children might be a good idea.

Monica

Hmm.......one of our dermatologists is off. Mine had to take what I call "core samples" of my skin. She basically took a hole punch, jabbed it into my leg, and took out a sample. Each sample resulted in 1-3 stitches and a fair amount of pain (once the local wore off).

OH WOW, that isn't what I had been told. I am sorry if I misinformed anyone. When I saw the derm, that is what I was told. I never had to have it done, the rash was too faded and almost gone by the time I got in!

Well, I have always thought if it showed up again, I may have it done, just to know for sure, but now.....I don't think I will! Shocked

Thanks for the info!

Oh don't get me wrong. If that's what it takes to get an accurate diagnosis, then fire away. I just wouldn't rush into the test. It left me with 2-3 scars on my leg. And if your dermatologist does it better, then gold star for her.

Punch biopsy is the norm. Mine needed a couple of stitches, although I had absolutely no pain even after the lidocaine wore off.

To answer Corgi's question. Skin problems other than DH are common in people with CD. I also have psoriasis, and eczema. My grand daughter who has responded remarkably to the GF diet, but has not been dx'd has had mouth sores all her life until going GF. Now her skin is perfect. The mouth sores are very common with pediatric CD. I sent my daughter an article on it, which is what prompted her to start the GF diet, based on our high family incidence of CD.

I had a skin biopsy done too...they numbed it up so it didn't really hurt but I did have some stitches which didn't come out for 2 weeks! My dermatologist was pretty much positive I had DH..but my rash was classic. It was the classic description and distribution. But he did a biopsy so I could have a diagnosis confirmed. I think they have to actually take a bunch biopsy...I'm not sure they can do the same thing with scrapings...but not positive on that one.
