I keep meaning to ask any of my dr's this question. I have epilepsy, and a brain injury from an accident. Since they told me there was damage to my small intestines, and it effects how it absorbs nutrients. Does it effect how the body absorbs medicine? Before I was dx w/ celiac I had an increase in seizures even though I was taking my medicine. Just wondering if I need to tell my neurologist the next time I see him.

Hi,

I believe it does affect medicine - but I'm trying to find info to back up my words. Yes, you do need to tell you neuro when you see him/her next.

It’s also important for pharmacists to be aware that medications may not work as expected in people with undiagnosed celiac disease, due to problems with malabsorption.

Here's something you might print out for your pharmacist: http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/digestive-health/nutritionarticles/PlogstedArticle.pdf

Absorption problems can definitely affect medication dosage. You may find that you can reduce or eliminate certain medication as your absorption improves. It is definitely advisable to discuss it with your doctor before making changes on your own, though.
