What are the symptoms associated with problems with Dairy?
Anyone who has been GF for a while who accidentally ate dairy (who shouldn't), so would know what can be attributed to dairy alone?
I am having the muscle twitching but don't think that I was glutened, so wondered if I do indeed have a problem with dairy.
Or are dairy symptoms limited to gastrointestinal distress? |

Before I went gluten-free, if I had too much dairy, I would vomit, and if I had just a little, I would get really gassy and have diarrea. It was definitely all gastrointestinal. Lactaid worked wonders as long as I didn't overdo it.
After going gluten-free, the Lactaid worked less and less, and for a long time I couldn't do even a bite of cheese. (I didn't have to take lactaid to eat a little cheese before). It's been a really long time since I've had enough to cause me to vomit, and even little bits with Lactaid now make me really rumbly, gassy and give me diarrea.
The good news is, I tried a small amount of sour cream and cheese on a baked potato today, and it's been about 6 hours with no symptoms (usually happens within 2 hours). I was also getting affected by milk chocolate and I had a snack size candy bar today, and I was fine after that too.
Do you think you're lactose intolerant also? I've never heard of other issues with it unless it's an actual allergic reaction rather than an intolerance. |

I react to casein - the protein in dairy. Very similar to my gluten reactions: anxiety, moodiness, low grade nausea and lack of appetite, sinus pain and weird aches and pains throughout my body. Ick. _________________ Nance

Thanks guys for the info. I don't know for sure what is going on. I need to be scientific about this: either take official tests or do a diet elimination test to know for sure.
My symptoms are neurological/muscular, so it could be gluten, but I didn't think that I had been glutened.
I wonder why things got worse for you after you went gf and your digestive tract could heal? Some of this stuff is certainly confusing and counterintuitive. |

Ina has a severe reaction to any casein....she has neurological symptoms, as well as aches and pains and she also gets a mouth full of ulcers within a day or two....her neurological symptoms last for at least 4 days and start within a few hours of casein consumption .....she seriously cannot handle even a tiny little bit...she is just as intolerant to casein as she is gluten...we were told by the GI doc that after being GF for 3 to 5 years that she might be able to handle casein, but so far she cannot _________________ Connie, mom to Ina, 13 y/o with CD |

My gut took a huge dive downhill about a year after going GF. Dairy, soy, corn, all grains and beans became problematic. I think part of it was my overconsumption of these foods (non-rotating diet), too many supplements (gut bombing!), and leaky gut causing increased sensitivity to many foods. IgG testing was helpful for me and I found that I have delayed allergies to casein, rice, yeast as well as wheat and oats. A big eye-opener. I am debating doing MRT or other, more esoteric allergy testing. The big debate is how much do I want to spend and how much do I believe in this kind of testing and the results. The IgG testing was very helpful, though it had to be pre-approved by my insurance.
Yes, it is counterintuitive and confusing! I can't begin to tally the number of hours I have spent on figuring this out over the past couple of years.
As for your symptoms, could be gluten, could be other stuff. Dairy is what most closely mimics a gluten reaction for me. Why not try elimination and then testing if you can. _________________ Nance

Should one get the official blood testing on this stuff? Or should one do an elimination diet test?
Typically, what is the best course overall for this stuff? I don't know anymore.
I am pretty sure that it is not all dairy that I am reacting to. So it may be something else, all together.
I guess, I should buckle down and be strict about trying to pin point this, with a journal and careful eating to isolate suspected problems and not eat all of them on the same day. lol.
I am getting to the point were, if not eating out, I can feel pretty stable as far as gluten free eating and body is concerned. So, I can look to identifying anything else that there might be problematic.
Lots of work.
Thanks for your comments. |

Remember: different dairy products have different levels of casein in them. So you might react to some, but not others.
If you're feeling better by staying away from restaurants, then that's what I'd do. The food journal is also a good idea. As far as diet vs. diagnosis goes...that's up to you. It's more of a personal choice. Would you feel better with an official diagnosis? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
