OTTAWA - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, today announced increased protection for Canadians with food allergies by introducing new labelling requirements for food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites contained in prepackaged foods. Health Canada also announced the launch of several allergy studies, including a large national study of food allergy prevalence, and two studies on the dietary habits and coping skills of people with celiac disease who are on a gluten-free diet. |
Maybe it's time to move to the Great White North? _________________ Al

Boy, I will be SO happy if they do adopt this ! I just got back from 3 weeks in the UK and their labelling is excellent. *Most* products have allergy alerts on them and wheat & gluten & barley are included. Crisps (potato chips) even have a "suitable for coeliacs" on them if they are ok. I could find some safe products simply by looking at different flavors of one brand (eg. like pasta sauce) and some would say they contain gluten, so I bought the ones that didn't mention it. I really hope we get to that point (yeah, I'm in Canada). |

Maybe Canada can give our FDA a good swift kick in the rear.
Hey...Wisconsin isn't THAT far from Canada... |

Are there other fellow Canadians on this forum? I would love to know the products that are "worth" buying that are available for us here. I live in Quebec. I take a trip to Ottawa to shop in stores there to get a variety. _________________ Sue

I have to say that there are two manufacturers that I totally trust, and enjoy in Canada. I live just outside of Toronto and I frequent WholeFoods in Oakville weekly.
I know our American friends can purchase Kinnikinnick products online. I really don't care for the bread products, but the mixes and crumbs are great!
Another bakery that I frequent is in Brampton. The owner is very educated and her food is amazing! You can purchase some of her products at WholeFoods (In Canada, not sure about the US). The company name is Organic Oven. Her breads, cakes, cookies, rolls, loafs are truly delicious! She also has a store in Brampton. I wish she offered online shopping. But we don't always get what we want! lol
As for the new labelling rules, it would certainly make shopping a little easier! |
