There's lots of ideas in this area. Many people have posted what they do.

The irony of winning a membership to a gym during COOKIE DAZE is pretty amusing! Which reminds me of a funny story about DD#4. She was working at a grocery store, and this store started this promotion to encourage employee fitness. They had to walk a certain number of miles to qualify for prizes, etc. Well my daughter worked her butt off, and won one of the top prizes....which was the fixings for a cookout. So what did her cookout consist of? Sausage patties (which looked to be about 50% fat), white hamburger rolls, potato chips, sugared soft drinks, and some kind of candy. Not a veggie or piece of fruit to be seen anywhere! We had a good laugh over that one. Sorry for the thread-jack.

I'm sorta iffy about gyms. On the one hand they're great because they already have all the equipment, and you can ask a professional if you need help. OTOH there's tons of exercises you can do at home that don't require any equipment. Perhaps you could regift the membership?

That's a really good idea Os. I've thought about that. However, working out is something that I need to do. Since i've retired from volleyball, I have no incentive to workout/train anymore. I take that back...I do have an incentive, one probably more important than VB. It's called high blood pressure. Since I've been GF, I have been able to go off HBP meds that I was one for 20 years. However, I've been noticing it going back up. I have no doubt in my mind that it is due to my lack in inactivity [and getting way to much computer seat time Wink].

Are there any other sports you're interested in? The key is to do something you like. Otherwise you'll never stick with it. Hence me being iffy about gyms.

*cuddles her Wii Fit*

Then again, you should be getting plenty of exercise practicing for Backside Story.

I am not big on sweating in a group. I have belonged to health clubs before, but they really are not for me. If I have to get in my car to drive somewhere to exercise, I just won't find the time to do it.

I love love love exercise videos. I have dozens of them so I won't get bored. Some are step aerobics, some are aerobics with weights, some combine the two. I especially like the ones put out by The Firm. I've been using many of their videos since the early 90's. The older ones are a lot of shocking pink leotards and "feel the burn" stuff, but still fun. The newer ones are much more challenging because the steps are higher. I also have several yoga and pilates videos that I enjoy very much. I REALLY enjoy the Bryan Kest Power Yoga series. Not only is he easy on the eyes (rowr!), the workouts are vigorous and will really make you sweat and get flexible at the same time. I use the library to try out new videos and buy the ones that really work well for me.

In the winter time, I use my eliptical trainer a lot. When the outside weather is nice, I walk during lunch for 45 minutes or an hour. I walk as fast as I can and swing my arms to really get the heart rate up. Nobody at work wants to walk with me because I go too fast. Laughing Add to that I am riding the bus, and the stop is a 15 minute power walk from work.

Exercice can be anything you enjoy. Yardwork, vigorous housework, walking, it all counts as exercise.

Tell me about the Wii Fit. Is it a really good work out? We have bought a Wii for our children for Christmas and I was thinking of asking for the Wii fit for myself. But I am more of a moderate to advanced exerciser, so would it work for me?

I run 3 days a week on the Treadmill (while watching the season DVD 24) and then 2 or 3 days a week I do The Firm for resistance or Biggest Loser body sculpt! I too love different exercise videos. I have done the gym thing too, but I do better at 5:00 a.m. by myself doing whatever I can at home! Also, when I have time in the evenings I enjoy walking with my best friend (again, we walk so fast that talking is more difficult) and on the weekends the kids love to BIKE (when it isn't too hot) and we walk behind them. Goal for the fall is to purchase 2 adult bikes and a bike rack for the Expedition!

1. Good luck finding a copy. They've been sold out since release. Stores still get them, but they typically disappear within 10 minutes.

2. It sounds like you already get quite a bit of exercise, so I really wouldn't suggest it for you. It's more for the beginner-moderate level. For example, it's introduced me to yoga, help me realign my center of balance, and increased my flexibility. It also lets you:

- See your real time balance on the screen, something no class can show you.
- Set goals. The goals can be modified after a number of weeks.
- Give you encouragement or advice, depending on how you're doing.
- Play fun balance games. Where else can you walk on a tightrope between buildings, or pretend to be a penguin and catch fish?
- Adjust your avatar (the representation of yourself) based on your weight. If you're fat, your avatar is fat. If you start to lose weight, so does your avatar.

Nutshell review: It does an excellent job of making you more aware of your body. This article does a better job reviewing it than I.

i enjoy doing things outside - field hockey, running, tennis, etc. when it's too hot or cold, i like to take classes at the gym because doing the elliptical can get boring! my favorite classes are body pump, boxing, and step. boxing is fun because we actually punch bags not just the air (like in kickboxing).

i'm starting a new job in 2 weeks (i've been a student for like 20 years haha so this is only my 2nd "real life" job). i'm thinking about buying some workout dvd's on those days i get home late and don't feel like hauling my butt to the gym. any recommendations? i'm looking for difficult ones...thanks!

Any of the Firm DVD's would be good. I don't think anyone would call them easy. The one issue I have with their cardio DVD's is they seem a bit DANCY for me! But I also have the cardio Biggest Loser DVD and I think it is good too!

I have read the Denise Austin stuff are good too, but have never tired them.

If you do a search of DVD's on Amazon.com, you can read various peoples review on them too!

Good luck with your new job!
