I finally got my hands on an air popper over the weekend. I haven't had air popped popcorn since I was a kid! I'm more of a plain popcorn gal (just a little bit of salt). However, DH proclaimed the popcorn too dry. I don't mind putting some butter on it, but I was hoping to keep this a low fat snack.

So what do you guys like putting on your popcorn? I'm willing to try home-made mixes, but it'd be nice if I could find a low fat (and of course GF) topping in the store.

I love popcorn! It's my favorite food in the whole world. There are so many things you can use to top it. Drizzle with a little butter or olive oil (doesn't have to be a lot) to the the dry stuff to stick. The Kraft Mac and Cheese powder in the canister is good. I also love garlic powder and parmesan cheese. Nutritional yeast tastes great on popcorn, but that may be an acquired taste. Very Happy There are some fun recipes on the Jolly Time and Orville Redenbacher websites.website.

Ooo, olive oil! That might be a nice compromise. Very Happy I mentioned the "Italian version" (butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, Parm cheese) but I got a strange look.

What's "nutritional yeat"? Did you mean "yeast"? Shocked

Sorry for the spelling error. I meant to say yeast. My spelling is great. My typing, not so much. Very Happy

Yeast? Wow. You're hard core. I imagine that really is an acquired taste. Shocked

It's not like regular yeast you use for baking bread. It's a powder. I think it's delicious, but my husband thinks it is disgusting. Laughing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutritional_yeast

Quote:
Nutritional yeast, similar to brewer's yeast, is a nutritional supplement popular with vegans and the health conscious, who use it as an ingredient in recipes or simply as a condiment. It is a deactivated yeast, usually Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It is produced by culturing the yeast with a mixture of sugarcane and beet molasses, then harvesting, washing, drying and packaging the yeast. It is commercially available in the form of flakes, photo or as a yellow powder similar in texture to cornmeal, and can be found in the bulk aisle of most natural food stores.
...
Nutritional yeast has a strong flavor that is described as nutty, cheesy, or creamy, which makes it popular as an ingredient in cheese substitutes. It is often used by vegans in place of parmesan cheese. Another popular use is as a topping for popcorn. Some movie theaters offer it along with salt or cayenne pepper as a popcorn condiment.

Interesting. I'd be willing to give it a shot, though DH would probably look at me like I've grown another head. Laughing

Tried your suggestion last night. Used olive oil, some Italian seasoning, and low-fat Parm cheese. Not too shabby! I just need to get the spice blend right.

Last year, I was on a popcorn kick. I bought a micro popper, so I can add my own toppings without chemicals.

I usually add a little butter, salt and maybe potassium fake-salt called NO SALT, ground flax seed, and gomasio (that is roasted sesame seeds with a little kombu). You can also add olive oil with one of those oil misters. Some of the misters are too fine so you don't get enough oil to make things stick, so I always have it with butter.

Nutritional yeast IS great on popcorn. Just don't say what it is, maybe

These things make popcorn a really nutritional powerhouse of a snack and I think they taste delicious.

Popcorn with a little salt and butter, and then M&Ms poured over while the popcorn is still warm. The M&Ms get all soft and melty inside. Nothing better! Cool

Did you sort them by color first?

Not for this "recipe." I only sort by color when eating M&Ms plain. Then I either eat in numerical descending order, or by eating my least favorite colors first leaving my favorite color for last. I'm a weirdo, I know. Sorry Os.....

Me too! It's buried hella deep. Will try looking for it again later.

I think I've mastered the popcorn toppings for now: a good drizzle of olive oil, some salt and Parm cheese. Tastes just like the white cheese popcorn you buy in a store, and I'm sure it's much healthier. NUM! DH still gives me weird looks, but I don't care. Means more popcorn for me. Smile

The red M&Ms are the best. They get eaten last.

If the lurkers are going to join in the fun, they really should know how weird we are. Wink
