Hey Al- when you get a chance can you give a shout out about how you guys do a fish fry? I know it's hard to believe that living in Maine I don't know how to fry seafood! Embarassed But, great seafood restaurants abound here, so whenever we've wanted seafood we just went out for it. It saves having my kitchen smell like fish the next day too. Being GF now means I'm going to have to make my own. I make boiled lobsters and steamed clams at home, but I'm craving some really good fried haddock.

Glad Peg's making you potato salad tonight! You must be one happy camper. Laughing

I too am really curious about this answer....I never ate fish until I moved to Nova Scotia, at which point I tried and fell in love with fish and chips, particularly if the fish was haddock. I guess the days of battered haddock are over Sad Finding a way to do fried haddock might help make this transition more palatable.

Hey,

I love seafood!! As I said in my WI Fish Fry post, Friday nights = fish fry in Wisconsin. This is something that I do miss. So, we just do it at home and invite people over Smile



Peg got me a Cool Daddy Deep Fryer as an Xmas present.

Yeah, it's probably not the healthiest thing - but we only do every couple of months. Also, I figure I'm saving A LOT of body abuse since I can't go out, so we can splurge a bit once in awhile.

I saw some lake perch fillets in the store recently and thought we should try them. We usually do Cod or haddock when we deep fry.

For coatings - we've used the Dakota. We've used the Zatarain's Crispy Seasoned Fish Fry. While it's GF by ingredient, I have to wonder about CC issues. I'm not saying they do have CC issues, but they don't have dedicated equipment. Zatarain's is an allergen friendly labeling company and they have good manufacturing processes in place, but... Besides that, it has MSG in it. It's GF, but I'd prefer to remove it as much as possible. So, I've been messing around with making a coating from scratch. However this time, we had some open Dakota we had to use up, so I didn't work on it this time.

I agree. If you use a good oil, I'm thinking the damage would be minimal. Not something you'd do every day, but we can't be perfect all the time.

The other day I bought a bag of Gramma Mill's Gluten-free Seafood Batter Mix. I'm going to try it. They are actually located fairly close to me. Let us know if you come up with a good mix.

Cool fryer! Peg spoils you. Wink I have a similar fryer. I like that I can cook with the lid down. There is a filter in the lid, so it may keep the fish smell to a minimum in the kitchen. I've never used it with seafood, so not sure if it will cut down on the smell or not. I don't mind the smell of seafood when I'm cooking or eating it, I just don't want to smell it the next morning.

Yup this has filter on it too. However the cover that contains the filter is broken so it doesn't stay in place.

I do my frying in the garage Smile
