| I need some advice...since I recently got married I have some pregnancy/fertility questions & hopefully someone knows or can direct me in the right direction. I have been diagnosed with celiac disease now for 4 years. I am very very strict with my diet & never cheat. I feel pretty good & healthy. I was just wondering if I will have any complications when we want to get pregnant since I have celiac disease? Is there anything I can do now to help my body to be able to be healthy enough to carry out a full pregnancy? Let me know any helpful advice you might have. Thanks! |

I lost a baby pre-diagnosis.
However once I was dx'ed I had been GF for four years and wanted to try again. I took GF Prenatal Vit's for a year before trying - then we conceived on the first try! (Dang it - I was hoping for more trying... teehee) Anyway, I stuck with a healthy diet and vitamins and had zero complications during the whole nine months then a quick labor (3 hours). So it can be done!
Good luck, relax and enjoy the experience. IMHO being a Mom is the most rewarding and fulfilling thing I've ever done. I hope the best for you. _________________ Cheers!

Although fertility problems are common, not everyone has them. I had two pregnancies pre-diagnosis, no trouble conceiving and even breastfed the second child. For me the pregnancies were the trigger that activated the CD, (both times) but I had healthy babies (9lbs) and no problems during the pregnancy and my son grew normally even though I was starving to death while I was nursing him. Good Luck. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Thanks for all of your encouragement & advice! I went out today and found these great vitamins. The brand is Nature Made. I got folic acid & B-Complex. The bottle says they are all natural & gluten free. The other cool thing is that they are extremely cheap! I paid $2 for a bottle of 250 at Wal-mart. Hope they help me stay healthy! |

We were in the process of having a surrogate carry our baby because I lost my uterus to cancer but my ovaries were fine. Before we started the process they checked and I had eggs in my ovaries. But after I took all the drugs and shots my body didn't respond and I didn't produce one egg. Everyone was suprised. The week before I started the drugs I had cheated and had a really bad wheat reaction. Could that have affected my egg production? _________________ Steph |

The only thing about the WalMart vitamins is that they are not easily absorbed. There is a required step in breaking this down for your body to use. In Celiac, it is hard for us to break it down to be absorbed. there are some that (I have only found at the Health food store) that are Methylcarbalton (the spelling is wrong, but I don't have time to look it up.) these are already to the point of being immediantly absorbed.
I used to get the WalMart brand and I thought that I was saving money on them, but basically, I didn't see where they were doing me any good. The ones that I now use. (2000 mg) are a much better vitamin for energy. _________________

Hi Steph,
I don't really have an answer for you [right now], but I wanted to at least welcome you to the board. Welcome!
Hmmm, that's an interesting question. I know CD and affect fertility, but I've never checked in to the "mechanics" of it. I s'pose it's possible. I'll poke around and see what I can find.
Sorry to hear about the cancer. I trust you are fine now? Hope so! How long have you been GF?
Take care, good luck in your Knowledge Quest and your GF Journey! _________________ Al

I know that they aren't walmart brand. (sorry) If the ingredient is :
CYANOCOBALAMIN and not the Methycobalamin (I think that I got that right), then it won't be absorbed as well by a celiac.
Thanks for pointing out my mis-speak. My fingers got ahead of my brain.....which happens when you are doing 3 or 4 things at the same time. _________________

I use Pioneer Nutritional Vitamins. They are very GF friendly and easily absorbed. A wee bit more expensive than what you'd find at Walmart, but worth it. _________________ Cheers!

Thanks for looking into it for me. It seems that the docters were a bit baffled by the idea. So I really appreciate your help.
The cancer never came back and I feel very lucky.
They diagnosed me with CD a little over 3 years ago. I get accupressure which seems to help a litttle. I am terrible at being GF. I do really good at home but break down at parties. At that moment I love food more then the fear of how I am going to feel in an hour or so. (The same thing happens when I go shoe shopping.)
I am glad I finally found this site. I think I will learn a great deal.
Have a good day. _________________ Steph |

Hi Steph,
I am glad that cancer never came back!! But I worry about your risky GF habits. That will cause you problems. Not only immediate problems, but long term problems. Cancer being one of them. It sounds like you got a taste of it once...do you really want to go thru it again?? I didn't think so... _________________ Al

I appreciate your concern and your candor. As I read over the website I read the list of possible related illnesses. It was very disturbing.
After reading your email I am thinking that maybe I should post that list as a reminder. I guess I am not really exposed to anyone else with the illness and have been able to ignore it a bit.
I am going to go eat a wheat free banana blueberry muffin and rethink my strategy. _________________ Steph |

Steph, I am glad that you are going to rethink your position! Only you can take care of yourself. Learning self control is so hard! Even though I may have a sweet at home, My mouth will water and what is before me looks like pure satisfaction. It is so hard to exercise those muscles of self control and say. "No thankyou with a smile on your face." Knowing that my future rests on my self control, I really try not to make any 'oops'. _________________
