I'm thinking a nice, big, juicy apple pie to start things off... So, I'm (once again) having family issues, though it's mostly centered on my brother. He's insisting we take our dad out for BBQ for father's day. But Famous Dave's already told me to stay away (cross-contamination issues I believe), and they're the only BBQ joint we have. I told him I could eat beforehand, but he insists that I just "get over it" for one day, join them for some BBQ, and that "it's not going to make me sick". I'm tried of fighting with people on this. I don't want to ruin Father's Day because I ate some contaminated BBQ, but I don't want to ruin it by not eating with the family. What in the world? I think it's great that your brother wants to take Dad out for a great meal... but not at the expense of your health! Maybe you can call the restaurant and explain the situation and see if they'll let you bring your own BBQ with you. Since your whole family would be there, perhaps it wouldn't be a big issue with them since you're the only one that would bring your own food. Better to "lose out" on one person bringing their own food instead of the whold family not eating there. Ya know? _________________ GF since 2/06 Do or do not; there is no try.

OK, so insist that he takes you up in his car and when he comes to pick you up head out of the house with a port-a-potty and some toilet paper. Maybe some barf bags. A change of clothes and some wet wipes. Tell him NO PROBLEM I can get as sick as you like now. Or stick to a plain baked potato and water. My sister had the idea that a couple of weeks ago we would all drive "up north" to a place that has old style german family cooking. I checked out the menu and for $16.95 a person, I could get a huge plate of gluten with some greasy fried chicken under it. There was not a single item on the menu that would have been ok to eat. Since it is served "family style" they charge even if you don't eat because they think you might share. Eating dinner was the only thing they planned. The town is so small that the other few places to eat were Mc Donalds or similar places. I choose not to drive the 80 miles each way (gas was $3.05 that week) to sit and watch other people eat. I don't feel like I missed anything at all. That is too far to carry a cooked meal and it was a long drive. I don't think that particular place would allow you to bring in food anyway. If I don't look out for ME, who will? It is pretty clear that my family will not make even small changes to allow me to be safe at family events. (This could have been in any of our homes and it would be easier to not eat and have things I brought myself) I spent a different day with my parents. If the sister only wants to do things that will hurt me, she can do them on her own. _________________ Dairy free 7-2004 Gluten free 10-2005 female

LOL, hell I probably would've not gone just due to gas prices! 160 miles is quite the drive for some dinner. I'll probably just eat beforehand (which'll also be a much healthier meal) and have something to drink if we go out. A bit of chocolate flavored Exlax squares slipped into a gluten free brownie will offer the same results. I think the Visine is the easiest to slip without being spotted though. Don't ask me how I know...I won't tell. TEC

They thought it was some new fangled 'American' thing! They didnt believe me when I told them it was actually a nothern European thing and there are probably masses of people that have CD but the Nation Health system won't test them because of money. Word is getting out everywhere but when your family thinks you are 'making it up' and subjecting your kid to the GF diet for no reason it does tend to get you a bit pissy! Maybe I am making up the type one diabetes thing too and injecting my son with insulin for no reason lol. Sorry did a bit of venting. My sons teacher also told him he was more likely to get stomach cancer from the diet soda he has to drink (cause of the diabetes) than from the Gluten!Way to go to get a kid to stick to the diet and feel great about his future. Oops sorry still venting. I really am a cheerful person normally! Maybe I need a whole pie!
