I have used Splenda for years and never thought much about it - until the day before yesterday. I had a bad flare up and decided to lay low on most foods - ate little, drank decafinated tea (with splenda), and was hoping to ride through this in a day or two. But each time I drank a cup of tea, I started to feel worse and worse. The next day I stopped using the Splenda in my tea and drank it plain (tasted terrible) but I found much relief from not adding the sweetner. Yesterday I did the same. I felt a whole lot better and no longer had the terrible diarrhea. Today I feel great! While on the computer yesterday, I did a search on Splenda and found this blog - I think it is worth reading....

Here is the link:

If you go to the right side and click on Splenda stories - you will find much more!

Let me now your thoughts....

Splenda is gluten free, but sometimes a person just can not tolerate certain foods. Once I learned about candida, I found out all sweeteners are not good for us. I use stevia, the brand I am using now is Truvia, and I do very well with it. At first, I didn't like it much, but told myself it is stevia or nothing, and now it's fine. Straight stevia is very sweet and you have to learn to use very little.

Glad you are feeling better.

I use Agave nectar most of the time in my coffee or tea. It tastes a lot like sugar, is low glycemic and you only need a little bit. Try Stevia too. In addition to being a healthy natural alternative to sugar, it provides medical benefits.

Actually I did buy Stevia - it is very sweet - just has a different kind of taste to it - not bad - just takes a little getting used to.

It was a blessing in disguise getting sick from the Splenda. I had always been told that I had IBS but after getting sick, and finding out more about gluten intolerance and Celiac, I am now more aware of what I should and should not be eating. And, of course, am gluten free now.

I was amazed after reading that blog though how bad sucalrose is for you.

Yeah, lots of people get very sick from many of the sweeteners. Sorbitol makes me very ill...they say to stay away from anything with "tol" on the ending.

I was using Splenda, Equal, Nutrataste, thinking with no issues. Once I gave them up though, I finally started losing the weight I had been trying to lose for years and years.

I will stick with the Truvia. Well, until summer when I plan on growing my own stevia. Wink

I can't tolerate any "fake" sugars (except Stevia, which is natural). It's because of my fructose malabsorption which many CD people have. You might want to watch your consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, too.

Artificial sweeteners have always given me horrible stomach pains, even before Celiac came in to the picture. I am not a lover of Stevia because of the nasty aftertaste, but do use the liquid form in tea occasionally.

A lot of the artificial sweeteners give me migraines. That's another reason I switched to natural sugar alternatives.

Here's and interesting blog post on agave nectar that might make you think twice about how good it is for you.

Steph,
I agree 100%. Fructose is a killer for me, and agave syrup is on my list.

Interesting, so that's why I feel bloated after eating a plain yogurt with agave syrup on it...I can have it with some honey instead, right?

They say honey is a good alternative. For me though, on a candida diet, honey is a no-no, as is agave syrup. I have used a tiny bit of pure maple syrup on squash, but it's not suppose to be used either.

I do find, I feel better without all of that stuff! Very Happy

Personally, I wouldn't touch Spenda with a ten foot pole.

Stevia tastes terrible ~ to me anyway. I bought a box of 100 packets on sale and donated 97 of them to the church!

HFCS isn't "just corn" no matter what the commercials say.

I confess to using Sweet'N Low or plain old sugar, although not very much of either.

I am a fan of real sugar (I try to stick to the organic stuff - Turbinado sugar is my fav and isn't overly processed), with the thought that all things in moderation are pretty much okay. Besides, the fake sugars occasionally give me terrible headaches so I avoid them...

Have you seen, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World? I'd like to think that it's a bunch of BS but how many times did someone tell me I was crazy, it was all in my head and there couldn't possibly be anything wrong with me because they couldn't find it on any test the could think to run on me? Yeah, well, I do have celiac and now GF I feel better, thankyouverymuch. Who's to say that all those people in the documentary haven't gone through the exact same thing except with artificial sweeteners?

If anything, being GF for a decade has taught me we really are what we eat and we were never meant to eat chemicals.

Very true Jenn. We all have been through enough turmoil with our health to understand, that which bothers one person, may never have an effect on another.

I had to give up all sugar and sweeteners before the weight came off and I felt better. Stevia or Truvia are the only sweeteners I can use that do not seem to bother me. It may only be because I do have a candida issue and all the sugars feeds candida. Maybe one day when I have this all under control, then I can try sugar again. Although, I do feel I probably will always have issues with candida. Rolling Eyes
