I'll be honest, I tend to stay away from a company that gives an answer like Honeybaked's.
>>Do your hams or turkey breast contain glutens?
>>We have reformulated our glaze to be considered free of allergens. This means our hams and turkey breasts DO NOT contain glutens.
Their glazes are free of allergens? ALL allergens? Uh, no. Maybe it's a typo and they meant to say free of the 8 major allergens (I'm assuming so), but as it stands, their statement means that the glaze doesn't have anything that anyone with any allergies can react to. Yeah...I don't think so.
Whether it's a mistake or not, considering how important this is to people's health, typos like this make me leery. Yeah, it's just a bit of text on a computer webpage, but it's a bit of text that could seriously impact someone's health. And either they have a typo, or they are utterly clueless about allergens. Neither option makes me feel safe with their food.
I also tend to avoid Conagra products because I think they are not friendly to those with gluten issues. I'm wondering, Edifying Conscience, if you might be thinking of Kraft as the one who labels gluten? Conagra, I'm sorry to say, takes a different approach.
This is the current information on Conagra's nutritional information page re: gluten:
We are sorry to inform you that we do not have a source that lists the gluten content of our products. However, our product labels list common allergens, such as wheat, for those allergic to wheat gluten.
Kraft's policy is this:
"...it has been a long standing policy for all Kraft and Nabisco products to list ingredients that contain gluten on the ingredient statement. These items will be listed using commonly known terms such as Wheat, Barley, Oats or Rye. For other ingredients that contain gluten, the grain source will be declared in parenthesis after the ingredient name. For example, if the ingredient "natural flavor" contains a gluten source, the label would read: natural flavor (contains rye)."
I've ended up recommending/purchasing Kraft products rather than Conagra as a result. I'd rather support a company that's making things easier (and safer) for Celiacs, ya know? |
