It seems I am developing a milk allergy. Just simply milk. Like cheese doesnt bother me or cooked milk in soups but plain fat free cold milk is making my stomach bloat.
That seems so weird, but is it? _________________

Doesn't seem weird at all.
I can do heavy cream, but NO milk. Fat free milk is the WORST!!!!!
I can do hard cheeses, but NO cottage cheese.
I think it has something to do with the casein and/or lactose. Hard cheese and cream are both low while milk and cottage cheese are higher.
Sour cream and yogurt don't seem to bother me either. I guess cultured dairy doesn't have much of the offenders in them either.

When I lost dairy, I lost it very slowly. First it was my cottage cheese, just couldn't eat it any longer. Then the yogurt went, which I didn't mind, never liked it anyways. Then cheese was making me ill, and when I finally gave up milk in my coffee, my insomnia, which I had been dealing with for years and years...went away. After that, even a handful of M&M's would make the insomnia come back immediately. _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

Did you end up going off Dairy at all??
I've gone off it for 10 days now and have a KILLER headache, nausea and general feeling of utter crappiness (for lack of a better description). Have any of you felt that since going off dairy? I didn't get any withdrawal symptoms from cutting gluten. |

mumtothree, I'm sorry that I can't recall if my husband had withdrawal symptoms or not. He seems to have both a lactose intolerance and a neuro response to dairy so it's kind of confounding. I have a casein allergy but I notice that cheese and milk make me feel really happy after I eat 'em; I have almost no doubts that I get an opiate-like reaction to it still. I would not be surprised if your body is going through a big adjustment. Plus it's winter and you could be ill at the same time maybe? It's always so tricky figuring out what's going on.
What have you replaced dairy with in your diet? I'm thinking fats, calcium and probiotics - are you taking steps to make sure you're getting enough of all of these? Coconut milk is a wonderful replacement for some things like smoothies, cream in coffee, etc. You might find coconut or almond yogurt at a grocery store. I get the almond yogurt or kombucha occasionally for the probiotics boost. I don't recall other dietary aims but I personally need to feed myself a fair amount of fat, lucky me! I don't know if I still don't absorb all that well or what but I am enjoying it without seeing any deleterious effects on BP or bloodwork markers. So I'm onboard with the paleo diet as it works well for me. Calcium from leafy greens, almonds, and supplements is the way I go. ymmv... _________________ son - high ttg - 4/09, pos. biopsy 5/09
