|
|
I called my hospital's dietician in anticipation of my hospitalization for childbirth. She was quite friendly and seemed pretty knowledgeable about the GF diet. She said she was going to send me a list of GF menu options and said that there were not many, but at least there would be a few things I could eat safely. Actually, because of the horrible hospital experiences of some other forum members, I was expecting to see a menu with Rice Krispies and white bread. I was pleasanly surprised at her accuracy and also at the many items available. There were more GF options but she had to delete them because of other intolerances I have. This menu was customized for my needs.
Beverages: coffee, hot tea, hot cocoa, 2% skim milk, whole milk, cola, lemon lime, ginger ale, bottled water, decaf coffee, decaf hot tea, iced tea, lactaid milk, lemonade, diet cola, diet lemon lime, diet ginger ale
Juice: Orange, apple, grape, prune, cranberry, tomato
Fruit: grapes, apple, orange, applesauce, pear halves, sliced peaches, pineapple chunks, prunes
Breakfast Entrees: scrambled eggs, scrambled egg substitute, omelet bar:plain, cheese, pepper, onion, mushroom
Cereal/Yogurt: grits, strawberry yogurt, vanilla yogurt, raspberry yogurt
Deli bar: turkey breast, roast beef, ham, american cheese, swiss cheese, provolone cheese, cheddar cheese
From the Grill (NO BUN): cheeseburger, hamburger
Hot Entrees: roast turkey breast, pot roast of beef, plain grilled chicken breast, plain baked cod, plain baked salmon
Cold Entrees: Chef Salad (NO CROUTONS), chicken ceasar salad (NO CROUTONS), cottage cheese and fruit plate
Accompaniments: whipped potatoes, parslied potato, green beans, corn, sliced carrots, broccoli, peas, greens, summer squash mix, steamed white rice, ceasar salad, tossed garden salad, coleslaw, cottage cheese, potato chips
Desserts: vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, vanill pudding, chocolate pudding, diet vanilla pudding, diet chocolate pudding, sherbet, fruit ice, popsicle, reg. gelatin cubes, diet gelatin cubes
There is also a huge list of condiments and salad dressings.
I'm still going to take my Rice Chex and nut bars, but I'm glad to know I won't have to live on them for 3 days! |

I emailed the hospital I am going to deliver at a couple of months ago inquiring if they had gluten free items. (My husband and I were trying to figure out exactly how much prep we would need to do for food...) Here is their response:
| Quote: | We do offer gluten free products on the patient menu. We specifically stock gluten free bread, cereal, pasta, and cookies. We also offer foods that are naturally gluten free (ex: fish, chicken, fruit, vegetables, milk, and yogurt).
If you would like more specific details, please feel free to contact the Clinical Nutrition Manager and she will happy to assist you further. |
I called the Clinical Nutrition Manager to follow up a couple of weeks ago. She knew exactly who I was when I called and said that they had just been talking about me. They let the Mother and Infant Unit know I was coming and what my needs were. She said they have things like Gorilla Munch and pasta on hand. She also told me to let her know if there was anything special I would like since she would be going shopping again before I arrived.
I was really blown away. Not only did I not have to explain the situation to someone else, she knew me by name. I was a little worried before I talked to her, but now I am confident that I won't get sick at the hospital from gluten. (giving birth is going to be enough of a strain on my body..) I will still bring some snacks with me, but like isto said, at least I won't have to live on them for 3 days or have my hubby run back home to get food for me.
Isto - I am so glad that the hospital you'll be delivering in will be safe too!! (And hopefully the mean OB will either be in a good mood or not on when you deliver...)

| Wow, Manda! What a great service your hospital is providing. It is nice to think at such a time as childbirth that you won't even have to really think or be concerned about what you are eating! Kudos to your hospital - very impressive! |
