Hey all,

As many of you know, my brother is getting married next week and I'm heading out to SF for the celebration. The rehearsal dinner has just been confirmed...and it's at a pizza kitchen/Italian place. I just called over there to see if they had any GF options...
Well, here's how the conversation went:

ME: Hi there, I am attending a rehearsal dinner there next week and I wanted to know if you had a gluten-free menu?
EMPLOYEE: If what is included?
ME: No, no. I can't eat gluten. Do you have anything on your menu that is gluten-free?
EMPLOYEE: What?
ME: GLU-TEN. I can't eat GLUTEN. Is there anything on your menu that does NOT have GLUTEN in it?
EMPLOYEE: Well, we serve pizza. It *all* has gluten in it.
Confused
ME: OK, so there's nothing gluten-free on your menu?
EMPLOYEE: Well, you could have a salad...
*click*
Mad

I'm trying to figure out what to do...should I just try to hit a Safeway before-hand and grab a GF snack? I mean, it's my brother's rehearsal dinner and I really don't want to call attention to myself because I'm not eating at *his* celebration...

Any suggestions? I am staying in a hotel and I don't know if I will have access to a fridge...

Your family already knows about the GF thing, don't they? I wouldn't sweat it. Eat what you can before you leave, then just sit back with a drink and make conversation. I'm sure nobody would even notice. And if they did, one question to your family (or you) would explain why you're not eating. Are there any restaurants you trust near there?

Ugh... frustrating.

Your brother would understand wouldn't he? You could...

1) Eat before - either something you've brought with you or maybe there's a more GF friendly resto in the neighborhood?

2) Get a salad with no salad dressing or see if they have a wedge of lemon.

Good luck!!

Thanks, guys! Those are good suggestions! Smile
And yes, the fam (as well as some of the in-laws to be) knows my GF status, so it shouldn't be a big deal. I guess I just got a little bit stressed yesterday with all of this coming up so soon! Razz Embarassed
Being that it's Cali, there are a lot of places that totally understand (and embrace) the GF lifestyle...if there's not a restaurant nearby, I know I can hit a Safeway for some snacks. I'm staying in the same hotel as my dad, who is very much on top of my diet, so I know he'll make sure I've got stuff to nosh on. Smile

No suggestions other than taking your own food to the restaurant (We've taken our own food to a pizza place once...with the managers permission).

I will give the guy on the phone points for knowing that pizza has gluten. Wink

Why not just take a meal to eat there? FWIW my rule is that I always take something better than what will be eaten there.

Call back and see if you can bring in your meal. Here in our town when the kids really want to eat at Pizza Stop, a Chipotle is next door. They let me bring in my burito bowl and eat it with everyone else. But don't assume you can take other food in there, call back to make sure!

I had to go to a catered event a few weeks ago where I knew there would be crouton-less salad. (Everything else was pasta and bread.) I filled my plate with salad and added a Chicken of the Sea Tuna Cup that I had brought with me. That way I got tons of protein and no one really noticed I was eating anything different. This might work at a restaurant where it is hard to tell if the chicken or other meats might have gluten in them.

Otherwise, I think it's fine to just eat beforehand.
