Hi there! I'm new to the forum thing, but I thought I'd try it out because I am also getting nervous about my trip. I just got the tip for finding GF foods in Europe, but I was wondering about the reality of actually finding them. I went to the "Happy Cow" website - great for vegetarians and vegans, but not so much for the GF. If anyone has any other leads or experiences to share I would greatly appreciate it Smile Thanks!

Hi Rainbow

Welcome to the board! Wow, a trip to Italy - how exciting. This might calm your fears a bit...they are very celiac aware over there. Italians have a high rate of CD - so do the Finns.

I'm sorry I don't have a lot of info for you....maybe some of this might help!

gluten/caseine intolerant heaven
I want to reassure those with Celiac disease and caseine intolerance that it is blissfully possible to eat well and safely in Italy! We found many gluten-free items in pharmacies and the restaurants seemed very aware and helpful. I was particularly spoiled in Gambacorta's Grocery store in Asissi(with whom we also booked a charming apartment from Rick's book). There was an entire gluten and caseine free *section* for me to peruse.
We were spoiled in Amalfi at Da Gemma restaurant who made not only one our most memorable meal but whipped up a beautiful Polenta tart with pears when they found I was gluten and caseine intolerant. They served it with Amalfi lemon sorbet and I could have cried. Thank You Italy!!!

Isn't the Professor (Lexi) either just back or soon to return from Italy? I bet she can tell you anything you need to know. I think she's been several times.

I was wondering about Prof myself. I'd be sad if she left. Sad

She was supposed to be gone for something like 3 weeks, maybe more (sometimes I suffer from CRS Disease as well) and she specifically said she would not be checking in. I expect that we will be hearing from her soon. How could she possible leave people as wonderful as all of us!!!! Laughing Cool Laughing Confused Confused

Edit for factual update, she was supposed to be back on the 27th of May to start the summer semester at the school she teaches at. I hope she is doing ok, she was sick for awhile before she left, blood transfusions and all if I remember correctly. Hope she is just ignoring us '''sob''', but just in case - Prayers for Lexi.......

Anyway I bumped for Rainbow the thread where she mentions her trip and what she does while she is there. (Didn't want to completely thread jack this topic)

I agree - and I have learned so much from her about the GF lifestyle. She would be a loss if she has decided not to come back. What's CRS Disease? (possibly "can't remember squat" - that would be me sometimes)

Lexi was offended by someone's post to her in another thread just before the start of her vacation. She said at that time that she would no longer be participating here. Unfortunately, she's followed through on her word and has not posted. She had a lot of information to share. I'm sad that she left. I believe there are a few of us who have tried to correspond with her to no avail.

That is too bad. The only thread I can think of that was busy about that time that would be so sensitive would have been the one about communion wafers. I sure hope that wasn't it - there was some stuff said there that was probably inappropriate and I am glad Al moved it, but I hope she can find it in her heart to accept an apology from whoever might have hurt her.

Y'all are the best!! I feel much better about my trip now ... I was dreading being in the land of pasta and gelato, with no yummy alternatives, and crying myself to sleep Wink The itinerary so far includes Rome, Naples, Amalfi, mybe some little town in Calabria and then a spot by the beach in Sicily. (not to make anyone jealous or anything Wink ) My Mother is actually planning the whole thing so whatever she decides is just fine with me.

Thanks again for all of your help and support ... I thought I might join this forum just to get some info. but I think I'd like to stay and chat for a while Smile

Rainbow....you needn't worry about travel and staying GF. Italy is very Celiac friendly but even if it weren't, you still should have no trouble finding good food to eat that is safe. I travel to Europe frequently and always stick with good fresh veggies, fruit (in abundance in Italy) and fish, meat and chicken. Europeans are much more into fresh produce and good, unadulterated food....not all the processed garbage that is so prevalent in the States. And gelato is GF so indulge! (Most gelato's are freshly made and not processed so it should be GF....I would probably ask to be sure but I had delicious gelato in London, of all places!)

Enjoy your trip and post on return....I would LOVE to hear where you went and what you did!
