Hello Everyone,
I certainly have been having a rough time with things, even though I went gluten free and have been dairy and egg free.
My doctor just ordered me to go nightshade free for 3 weeks to test if I have a positive response.
Any info on this? I'll do an internet search and research it. I was just curious if anyone had a similar and could help. For example, its all in my salad dressing- tomatos, bell peppers... Now I can't eat the fish I made last night, or the salad. Hahahaha. Its just one more thing. Maybe it will help.
And do I have to avoid potato starch? It's in my gluten free bread, and the gluten free waffles (that I am eating right now. Yum.)
Any advice?
Thanks! |

ACK! Sorry to hear that Dance
Here's some info on nightshades: http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=62
http://www.tahoma-clinic.com/arthritis.shtml
| Quote: | | Sensitivity to certain alkaloids naturally present in "nightshade" vegetables causes pain and swelling in a significant minority of individuals with degenerative arthritis. Nightshade sensitivity is not the same as allergy, and is not detectable by any laboratory tests in current use. The only way to figure out whether nightshade vegetables bother you is to totally eliminate tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant from your diet, along with tobacco exposure in any form. Even if you're nightshade sensitive and totally eliminate all of these, it can still take three to four months for symptoms to recede. For a complete guide to a nightshade free program, check your natural food store for books by Professor Norman Childers. |

Data gathered from noted scientists, horticulturists, medical researchers, and macrobiotic sources provides a look at the facts and fables about these popular plants, their characteristics, history, effects, and their enduring appeal to the world's appetite. |

| Wow. Thanks for the links Al. All good information. I wonder if I eliminate the nightshades if the fibromyalgia will go away? Can't hurt to try... |

FWIW I've pretty much given up on nightshades as well due to joint pain (read: inflammatory response). I'm ok with tiny amounts like black pepper or the occasional guacamole or salsa, or a few french fries, but other than that I don't eat them regularly. It's worth a try to see if you can notice any difference, especially if your diet is heavy on the nightshades, as mine was before I cut way back.
As far as what you can and cannot eat (potato starch), you should probably take the same approach as you do w/ gluten - all or nothing.
Good luck - let us know if you notice any changes. _________________ Nance

I have been avoiding the nightshades. My muscle spasms and joint pain have not lessened yet, but my overall exhaustion is lessening. I don't know if its related or not, considering I am trying new fibro meds.
Black Pepper, according to my research, is not a nightshade as it comes from a different species of plant, so it is safe to eat. Yum. |

I too, gave up nightshades a long time ago, at least 2 yrs. Strange thing though, I can still eat potato chips, without a problem. A baked potato, or mashed potatoes, make me ill. Tomatoes cause a reaction in 20 mins or so, of course, I love them. I have heard though, that often the food you love most is usually something you can't have. I love potatoes as far back as childhood, I could have lived on them, if possible. Tomatoes took until I was an adult before I liked them. Green peppers were always repeaters for me anyways, so I don't miss them as much.
It seems there are many of us who, in addition to gluten, must give up many other things too. Lets blame it on the gluten!!! _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |

Hey Deb,
What kind of reaction do you notice within 20 minutes of eating tomatoes?
My doctor said that potatoes are not nearly as bad as the other nightshades. And according t one websight, they have less of the toxin per milligram of food, or something like that. I've read so many, I'm loosing track.
But I'm trying so many new things, I'm not sure what to attribute to what yet. We will see.
I certainly hope that we don't have to give up any more foods that we love! I can NOT give up chocolate! |

Tomatoes first give me terrible cramps, then diarrhea. I do not enjoy them enough to deal with the aftermath!!! _________________ You can't discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore! |
