Sarah: I was never a big beer drinker as a youth (I can't imagine why? I didn't know at the time that you don't "out grow" celiac that you had as a child!) I also have tried Redbridge and didn't like it. I have found that I do like New Grist. It is somewhat sweeter, I think, and goes great with pizza! If everyone else is having beer, New Grist is my choice.

Yup! Many times It's made in the beer capital of the US. Milwaukee WI
It's good. It has kind of a cidery taste - hard to describe. I went to a liquor store that sold me just one bottle. But I couldn't drink it in the store. So...I took it back to my car and drank it there. Talk about feeling like you were back in high school again. I drank it in about 3 minutes for fear of getting caught. It had been my 1st in 3.5 years! FWIW - I never drank in HS...
See if they'll sell you just one bottle of it.
I'll like Redbridge. That's what I have in my beverage fridge. I'd prefer to have Bards Tale, but that's not available in WI yet _________________ Al

Sadly I can no longer drink beer because of the yeast (of all things...sheesh!) but when I was drinking GF beer, Redbridge and Bard's Tale were my faves. New Grist was just too darn sweet and carbonated for my taste. Good thing I drank my life quota of beer before I went GF. _________________ Nance

Hmm...
*wishes she could mail over some Redbridge*
I got a case of it for free, but I don't really care for it...and it's taking up real estate in my fridge! _________________ ~Torrey

Holy cow as case!!! It'd take me a year or 2 to go thru that. I'm not the beer drinker I used to be
I bet there's some local gluten intols that would like a new best friend [that just happens to have a case of free beer] _________________ Al

Al,
I can never remember which GF beer I like the most without your help. My favorite is the one that's not your favorite. So, do I like New Grist or is it Bard's Tale?
I've been meaning to make a loaf of beer bread. I thought I would just sub beer for the water in the Honey Yogurt Bread and see what happens. First, though, I need to buy some beer.

TEC, I suspect you like New Grist. I seem to remember you talking about a hard cider [Woodchuck maybe???] that you liked.
Oh - please let us know how the beer bread turns out!! _________________ Al

As long as we're in the beverage recipe section...has anyone tried to make their own GF beer? _________________ Al

I wouldn't call it a purposeful making of beer, but I was talking to a friend about Woodchuck, and he said that they made something really similar when he was in college. I guess they lived on a dry campus, and one day he went to clean out the fridge, and grabbed the bottle of apple juice that had been in there all year. One of his friends told him not to throw it out because you could get drunk off of it. He said it turned out his friend was right, and it tasted just like Woodchuck.
I personally prefer to leave it up to the manufacturers unless I'm doing something purposeful, and I would never suggest drinking year-old apple juice, but I guess it's an option. |
