I know that a lot of people replace some of their kitchen utensils/colanders/etc once they start the GF diet. I did that...but just realized tonight that my muffin tins, bread pan etc- all once had gluten products in them. Has anyone felt the need to replace those as well?

We have separate GF cookie sheets, muffin "tins" [mine is silicone], bread & cake pans.

I think the answer depends on whether you are going to continue cooking non-GF items in your house anymore. If you are going to have a "mixed" household, then definitely buy new for yourself.

I decided when I went GF that nothing with gluten would be cooked in my house again, since I'm the cook. I kept all of my cookware that was in good shape, and washed it all thoroughly. I figured that if there was any gluten left that it would be gone with one or two washings at the most. I have not noticed any CC issues and I'm acutely aware when I get glutened. I owned really good cookware, and couldn't bear to throw it away. The only thing that I had an issue with CC was with my pot-holders. I forgot all about how much contact they had with flour, etc. The first time I baked a pizza I used them to get the pizza out of the oven, and then ate the pizza with my hands. Guess who got sick??? So I would suggest new pot-holders/oven mitts, because I think they would be really hard to wash the gluten out of.

I would suggest new cutting boards for yourself that you mark clearly as being GF. I did get new boards, because I think it would really be hard to get the gluten out of the cuts that knives create in the boards.

The other thing I would toss would be a hand-held mixer if you've used it with gluten items. Have you ever noticed how much flour and stuff flies up into a mixer when you use it? I have a big Kitchen Aid that I use most of the time, but have always kept a hand mixer for little jobs. BTW the Kitchen Aid is great. It has the power you need to get the job done with GF baking, and it is really easy to keep clean.

I guess it's a personal decision whether to get new cookware or not. I just thought I'd share what I chose to do.

I have a mixed household....we don't even own a toaster, b/c I felt like there were crumbs all over the counter top from the toaster all the time....I just use the broiler in my oven. We have a separate GF muffin tin, that is kept in a separate location...I cover my cookie sheets with foil or parchment paper every time I use them and still scrub them thoroughly....I have a separate hand held mixer that is clearly labeled, I agree that hand held mixers are impossible to keep uncontaminated (I think muffin tins are also impossible to keep uncontaminated)...I use a glass cutting board, I never use wooden utensils for GF cooking....my bread pans are glass...I thoroughly rinse all my dishes prior to putting them in the D/W...I use more paper towels in the kitchen than wash rags and handtowels and Ina never touches them if they are out....

Thanks for all the advice...I'm going to go out and get a couple of new things. I honestly didn't even think about the hand-mixer!!!! or the oven mitts for that matter.

I've been GF about 5-6 weeks, and I have been sick twice this week from contamination issues- not foods specifically. I thought I had been really careful, but I knew there were things I was overlooking.
