First I would like to mention that my mother and sister have celiac disease, and I was tested about 8 years ago and it was negative.

Over the past 6 months I have changed my diet, re-introducing a lot more bread and pasta (generally I used to eat a carb free diet to keep weight down) and i very rarely ate wheat (actually I used to consider it like a poison that would make me fat!).

6 months ago due to finacial contraints I started eating more pasta and bread.

Since then I have noticed:

Weight loss (normally this diet would mean weight gain for me)
Aching bones and aching muscles in arms and legs
Suceptible to colds and flus (is this a symptom)
Some diarrhea but more often constapation (this has been going on for years)
Some wind and bloating but not unbearable
Sometimes feeling sick and uncomfortably full after eating (but not always)
Exhaustion and fatigue
Completely gone off drinking wine (makes me ill and have headaches)
Headaches (I never used to get headaches)

I'm really worried about what is wrong with me, and because I previously had a negative test and have eaten gluten in the past without major problems (always had some bloating and wind) I'm not sure if it could be celiac?
I also don't always have the symptoms so I suppose

1: I'm wondering if it is possible to have it even if you don't have the symptoms all the time?

2: If you have previously had a negative test could you still have it?

Any advice helpful!

Hi Palace,

Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear you're feeling poorly.

Due to your family history, yes you need to be tested. One negative test will not clear you for life. Periodic testing is suggested/recommend for those that have family members with CD - symptoms or not. If you've got symptoms - testing for CD should be the 1st order of business [at least it would be for me].

Screening for celiac disease in family members: is follow-up testing necessary?

Celiac disease is a genetically determined intolerance to gluten that results in villous atrophy in the small intestine. Because celiac disease occurs in families, relatives of affected individuals are tested for the disease. However, there are no evidence-based guidelines for when, or how often, to test relatives. Our goal was to determine if one-time screening of relatives is sufficient. Of 171 family members with an initially negative endomysial antibody who were tested on more than one occasion, 6 (3.5%) were positive on repeat testing. The average time to seroconversion was 1.7+/-1.2 years (range, 6 months-3 years 2 months). Only one of the seroconverters had diarrhea; the remainder were asymptomatic. None of the patients had a change in symptoms between testing. We conclude that one-time testing for celiac disease among families with affected members is insufficient. Repeat testing should occur irrespective of the presence of symptoms.

You can develop CD at almost any point in your life. If you have the genetic make up for it [which it sounds like you have a pretty chance you do], you need a trigger: illness, infection, surgery, pregnancy, some say even high levels of stress. Something that sets your body off. Of course, you need gluten too.

Be advised you need to be consuming gluten in order for your blood work to be as accurate as possible. You'd want to make sure they run a Complete Celiac Panel - this will give you the best possible picture.

I hope this helps...

Good luck! Please keep us updated!

Thank you for your response.

I am going to the dr today to start the blood testing process so I will let you know how I get on.

It is always good to get some feedback! I did have another question - is it normal to have a lowered immune system due to untreated celiac disease? I have had about 4 colds in the last 6 months and I don't understand why. I was wondering if this is something others had experienced in the past?
