Hey everybody,
I was wondering if it's normal to experience sugar cravings when first starting out going GF.
Ever since I cut out gluten I've been getting these really strange sugar cravings, and suddenly feel the urge to eat copious amounts of dried fruit and drink fruit juice like there's no tomorrow. I know doing this can't be any good for my liver or my blood sugar levels so does anyone have any ideas how I can beat this feeling? It's usually just after dinner that I get this feeling, if that's any help. _________________ - Amy

I went through that very badly! Of course I am one that grew up with dessert being available at every meal............I still eat quite a bit of sugar laden cookie. If I can have a little then I am okay, but take it completely away and I will eat everything in the house that isn't nailed down. _________________

Yeah, I have to figure out some way that I can deal with mine too. I'm thinking maybe just nibbling on whole fruit. Hopefully that will work. _________________ - Amy

I don't know if you take supplements but I know that have a deficiency in B-complex can cause people to crave sugar in the worst way. Maybe you've replaced wheat with a lot of white stuff like white rice and rice flour or pasta? That does tend to cause B deficiencies. There are other reasons, too of course. Being tired, being depleted of other nutrients and things like that. I go through cycles, it seems, where I don't crave much sugar. Right now I've been craving sugar a lot, especially raspberries with agave nectar on them. I keep telling myself to take my B-complex, but I'd really rather have the sugar. |

Ah OK. That makes sense. I've been off my B complex for about two weeks because I was unsure of whether it had gluten in it. Having investigated further I've found that it's gluten free, so I should get back onto that quick-smart!
Thanks for your help I completely forgot about my multivitamins since getting extremely ill these last couple of weeks... how ironic! Haha! _________________ - Amy

I like the fresh fruit idea. At least it's healthier than chowing down on a pile of cookies.
I'm wondering if small doses of "strong" sweets would work? Like one or two squares of dark chocolate? That usually kicks the sweet craving for me. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

What about other small candies? Perhaps a few gummies? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I'm not really big on sweet things at all really, which is why the sugar cravings came to me as a shock. I've just been eating dried fruit... but, well, we all know what happens when we eat too much of that Haha!
I'm just going to have to fight them off some other way... _________________ - Amy

Could it be a carb thing? Carbs get converted into sugar. You reduce the carbs, you reduce the sugar you body is getting. _________________ Al

I was just going to post a reply that essentially said the same thing when I found Al's post.
I'm wondering if being new to the celiac diet, and being so careful (boot camp) just naturally cut you way back on your carbs. Sounds like you weren't eating legumes, etc. because you weren't sure if they were safe. I'd try adding in the lentils, some brown rice, potato, etc. (whatever you like, and is GF)and see what happens.

Sounds like you are aware of blood sugar levels, so I would just say that if you have other symptoms with the cravings, or the cravings don't stop, get checked out by a doctor to make sure you're not dealing with another issue. Forums like these are a great source of info, but remember, we're not doctors. Anything you are not sure about should be reported to your doctor.
I know you've expressed concern about cooking at your house because of CC issues. I'd suggest maybe cooking only a couple times a week, if possible. Clean the whole area down well, including pots and pans. Make up a big batch of lentils, brown rice, etc. Then you could store them in your own containers that you have labeled GF. You could even add something funny like DON'T TOUCH IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE!!! Sometimes humor is the best way to get a message across without making people feel bad. You know your family; use whatever works best for them. Most families want to help, they're just not aware of what the issues are.
I've found that pre-planning is essential with this diet. That's why I suggest pre-cooking some big batches. It ensures that you will have some safe food ready at all times.
Best of luck,
Steph |
