Hi everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself really quickly. My family has been gluten free since just after Thanksgiving, as my 8 year old daughter was exhibiting signs/symptoms (small stature - at 8 years old she is smaller than my 5 year old son, dental problems, frequent stomach upset, mouth sores, poor sleep, strange skin rash, etc.) of celiac disease. Within a couple weeks of being GF, her symptoms virtually disappeared, and strangely enough, so did mine (although I had denied to myself for about a year that I even had symptoms!). =)
Anyway, what with family history and the recent positive changes in health, we are planning to stay GF. My husband is really lovely about it and hasn't complained a bit about my GF cooking disasters.
Fortunately, my mum pointed out this board to me, which is a fantastic resource, and looks like a great support network, too!
Nice to 'meet' you all! |

Hey Ali,
Welcome to the board. It's good to hear the entire household is experiencing the benefits of the GF diet
It's amazing the things that you just accept as "normal" and put up with. Once you see the changes that you body goes thru, you kind of have to wonder how long you've had issues... Denial is very powerful and often hard to over come. Well done!!
Had you considered getting your DD tested at all prior to going GF?
Sounds like you've got a great home support system! Does you Mom frequent this board? She's a wise one for telling you about it! heheheee
Good luck on your GF Journey, looking forward to getting know y'all! _________________ Al

Hey Ali! Welcome! Much love for all the family support you're getting. That's awesome. And don't worry too much about the cooking disasters. We've got a bunch of cooking deities around here who'd be happy to help, as well as an amazing recipe section. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I thought I'd jump into this with an introduction, too, as I'm one of the brood. (Hi Ali! Hi Mom!)
I've lurked here occasionally for the past 6 months or so, but just signed up tonight. Suspected celiac disease for several years after punching in my various symptoms into Google in a fit of desperation. Went GF about 3 years ago, but couldn't stick it out much longer than 3 months then.
In May of 2007 I went to the doctor and had the blood tests done, one of which came back positive. (can't remember which one.) They wanted me to do the intestinal biopsy, too, but I figured, why bother? Went GF as SOON as I had the blood drawn and had almost immediate relief.
Due to CC issues, the whole family went GF in the house, but then my kids started developing wicked intestinal issues after eating school lunch and having regular food at church suppers. So we made the switch to total GF, and both kids are thriving, no tummy troubles, and my daughter started GROWING. Haven't bothered with testing them, figure if they want to they can do a gluten challenge when they are older.
Life's good GF! _________________ GF since May '07, positive blood-test results. |

HOLY COW! Welcome to the board Tooth.
As long as you're doing fine on the diet - that's all that matters.
Make yourself at home. Drinks are in the fridge. We might have some Chebe 'Za left if TEC hasn't finished it off already _________________ Al

So as you can see, Al, mum does frequent the forum. =) And my sis! (Hey there, tooth. interesting name...)
We had considered testing first, but I couldn't see making my daughter continue to be exposed to something that could be harming her, if I had the means to prevent that. So, we decided to go GF and see if there were any changes. After the positive results, I decided, like my sister, to stay GF and let her decide when she is older to do a gluten challenge if she decides.
Ostrich, I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of the cooking/recipe help! So far my disasters revolve mostly around forgetting important ingredients... like the xanthan gum. oops. As long as I stay away from baking I'm ok! Unfortunately, my kiddos like cookies.

No worries Ali, we all screw up. I screw up almost daily. If you're not used to GF baking (or normal baking) it can be alot to handle/remember. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
