|

Just when I thought I have found the answer to my life long digestive distress (GF for 8 weeks now), here comes an insurance company to tell me I am sick. I was just denied disability insurance because of celiac. This seems ludicrous to me, as it's a disease that is easily (well, not really, as those of us eating GF know) treated and "cured" by controlling the diet. I have never had the vaguest thought that I could be disabled by celiac. Perhaps undiagnosed people may be extremely ill to the point of disability, but as soon as you are diagnosed, you can start getting better.
My question is this: Is there anyone out there disabled by CD? Thought I'd take a poll before confronting the insurance company.

Dee,
It sounds like the company was looking for something to deny you insurance or they don't understand celiac disease. There are other auto-immune diseases that you can get because of the celiac so that might be what they're referring to. I would ask them how this makes you disabled. I'll bet they don't have an answer. _________________ With God, all things are possible... |

I was told that Celiac is a condition that qualifies as a disability with the ADA (American W/Disabilities Act).
It may be one of the diseases that is listed with the ADA that insurance companies cross-reference. I'll try and check with our HR department and see - my wife also works in the insurance business - I'll check with her too. |

Disability try life insurance
My health was ina serious state, when I was diagnoised. I worked as a nurse. Today I can only work at simple nursing jobs and only part-time. I tried to get my husband'shealth insurance to cover nutritional coucelingfor GF diet. I was told that they would only cover nutrutional counceling for diebetes. My orignal counceling concisted of " Your smart go look it up on the computor". So, not only disability ins. but health insurance company's are ignorant about the conditon too. Also, life insurance company's are too.
I tried to get extra coverage. the life ins. rep asked about my health and I told him I had celiac desease. He must of heard "Silly- Yak" and he asked me If I was pulling his leg?
You may want to try claiming malabsorbtion syndrome if CD efected your digestive system.

So Jeannine, you are saying you are disabled by celiac? You are in a wheelchair solely because of celiac? If that's the case, I guess my insurance company is right, and people do become disabled from celiac. Are you GF and getting better? My point to the insurance company is that once you are diagnosed, you get better, and since I'm diagnosed, this will never be a disabling disease for me.
I am not trying to receive government disability benefits, I am trying to get disability insurance from a private insurer that will replace my income if I ever were to become disabled.

Hi Dee,
I agree with your "easily treated" comment. Yes, figuring out the GF diet is tough at first, but once you get the basics under your belt, it's very do-able!! I don't think there are too many diseases that you can treat with a diet change.
As for disabled celiacs...I don't know if I've ever run into anyone that has been disabled by CD. Disability Insurance companies are very fussy about who they cover. I was denied due to high blood pressure. I was taking my meds and it was controlled. Another company would cover me, but the prems where cost prohibitive.
Good luck in your fight! Let us know how it goes. _________________ Al
