I was just wondering if anyone had a list of good/bad cheeses??
I know that cheddar and mozarella are ok, and I know that blue cheese is a no no. My dad often has wine and cheese plates out, I was just wondering which other ones needed to be avioded.
Thanx! _________________ *Wendy*

Basically, the blue cheeses are questionable, and most all the other ones are ok. Unless they are a spread, then check the labels.
I got an issue of http://www.glutenfreeliving.com/ recently, mainly because it discusses blue cheese, as well as others. The deal with blue cheese is that the mold is cultured on rye bread for the most part, though there are some brands that have another, non-bread based way of doing it. Anyway, the article boiled down to saying that the amount of gluten (they used math) in a serving of blue cheese is so ridiculously small that it is not a problem. I haven't tried any since last December when I ate some Cambozola blue brie and felt sick shortly after. Blue cheese is one of my favorites.
Two weekends ago I was at a cheese specialty shop in town and talked to the cheese counter guy. I asked if he knew which blue cheeses he had that were cultured on bread and we discussed this for a while. He said that while he couldn't imagine really any gluten got into the final product, he respected my decision to avoid it until I had better information. But he did offer that this orange Cheshire cheese he sells, with blue mold on it, would be gluten free as the mold comes from contact in the case from other blue cheeses, not from injection of the mold. I got some and it was pretty good but not really a blue cheese experience.
I have also read that some places test for gluten and don't find it but from what I know talking with the cheese guy, they use rye not wheat bread to grow the mold, and from what I've read about gliadin tests, they test for wheat gluten/gliaden, not rye or barley (supposedly there isn't a test for those). So I don't know if a test reporting that there is no appreciable gluten/gliaden is significant. _________________ Stephanie |

What does blue cheese have in it? I learn something new everyday. It's great. The reason I ask is, many of the higher end resturant down here make a dish called "the Wedge" it's iceburg lettuce (1/2 of the head) with bleu cheese dressing over it and it is delicious. I had no idea about the cheese at all. Thanks and I'll be watching this group for answers.

Oh yeah, love the wedge salad. A local restaurant here started serving that when they opened a few years back. Not a big fan of iceburg lettuce but something about that combo - 1/4th head of iceburg with a fat onion slice and blue cheese dressing.... and a filet mignon! Super good... _________________ Stephanie |

Exactly what I had for dinner last night for my anniversary dinner. Waiter knew all about CD. Was a great dinner until they offered Creme brulei (however you spell it) for a complimentary dessert. Passed on that. Not a clue what is in it. HAHAHA

|
|
Recently I had an food allergy test. Three of the nine allergies were for Yeast, Mixed Moulds & Cow's Cheese. (Not milk)
I did LOVE Cheese. Now it is a no no.
I realise about the mould with Blue Cheeses but I didn't realise they were cultured on Bread.
I eat Soda bread or Soda Farls & I would love a piece of Cheese.
The only cheese I can find at the moment that is not Cows Cheese is Feta Cheese.
Does anyone have any ideas of suitable Cheeses?
Thank-you Ann |

Hi Ann,
Did they tell you what exactly in cow's milk? Was it casein (protein) or lactose (sugar)?
Finding a cheese replacement is...difficult It's not as easy as find gluten replacements
When it is missing casein - it has lactose. When it's missing lactose - it has casein. GRRRRRRR
The only replacement I've found is http://www.tofutti.com/. I don't know if it's avail. to your "across the pond" tho. It's primary ingred is SOY - which is one of the big 8 allergens. _________________ Al

Hi Al,
Thank you for your quick response & information.
I shall contact the Clinic tomorrow & ask the question.
I do know that another of the allergies was for Sugars. He was very specific that it was for Cows milk Cheese & not Cows milk.
I have also been advised not to take Soy Sauce, Mushrooms or Chinese foods. Boo Hoo - cry myself to sleep.
I was going to try Soya Milk but found out in time it contains sugars.
Over the past two weeks I have not lost anymore weight. Thank goodness. My diet at present is so limited otherwise I have a lot of gastro problems. Still undiagnosed.
Thanks Ann |

Apparently it is the mould in the Cheese. Bacteria. I must have had a complete Brain fog when he first explained to me. Maybe in a few months I may try either Cheshire or Lancashire cheese. As long as it is grilled to kill off the bacteria!!

I looked at the ingredients. Most of them contain vinegar/cream cheese. Thank you for trying.

Welcome Haley! I was diagnosed about 2 months ago also & this forum has been the most helpful. If you read the posts above you will get your answers...Most cheeses are o.k., the blue cheese mold comes from rye bread so it's basically a no no. This is a long process but i'm sure we'll all come out ahead if we stick with it.

Has any body tried the Goat Cheeses? They have a good cheddar, mozzarella, & fetta goat, plus chevre & some other variety type goat cheese with names I can't pronounce. But with my CD/wheat intolerant problems I became lactose intolerant, so I tried the goat cheese, they are very good. They are creamier & richer than cows milk cheese, I think they are great in flavor. Try some, and let me know what you think.
thanks,
TJ |

Where do you find them at the store? Do I go to the health food store or regular store? Do I go to the deli or just where they have massive amounts of cheeses to pick from? I'm interested!
