Thanks for all your work Stephanie.
My husband is gluten free, casein free, and is also sensitive to Yellow Dye #5, erythromycin, sulfites or something in bacon, and vinegar. All cause rashes, hives, and/or breathing difficulties.
He also has an IgA Deficiency.
Before he was gf (15 mos now!), he was on a lot of meds for asthma and allergies, which he no longer needs.
How did you find out about the aspergillis in Lovastatin? I'm wondering because I'd like to find out if it's used in the production of erythromycin.
We have been strictly gf and cf, no yellow #5, or vinegar, but about 4 times in the past 8 days, he's had TERRIFIC hives.
After collecting all of the "processed" foods (all confirmed gf and cf) on the menu over the past 8 days, the only questionable ingredient is "citric acid"! I know that sometimes finding the cause of hives is difficult, b/c something that you've used for a while suddenly cause hives, even if it didn't before.
Eliminating citric acid (drinking A&W Diet Root Beer instead of soft drinks containing citric acid, etc.), starting yesterday.

On a side note (sorry this is so lengthly!), I am gluten free, too, trying to clear up my skin. Since early childhood, I've had a sensitivity to skin products, like Betadine, that contain any form of iodine, so I'm wondering if I might have DH. I read they used to test for DH by putting iodine on nearby skin and watching for inflammation and welts.

Hmmm...

I didn't know that Pig meats were full of fungi when cooked but may be a cause along with the sulfites.

This is totally amazing to me. I mean, other than being frustrated that there is even more food out there I can't eat, I can't believe how many things are connected that I knew caused me problems - all from a mold. Wow!

Anyway, worth knowing. Hope this helps someone.

BTW - Beano also is made of aspergillus. Like Lactaid.

Hi Steph,

Wow - I hope things are settling down!

Thanks for sharing all work hard work!

Beano is also not GF.

Just to touch on the iodine- some people with DH, once they go GF have issues with iodine. They find that if they are still getting DH, cutting back on iodine sometimes helps. I have not experienced this. It is not generally advised to bother with this, but some feel it plays a role in some cases. Mostly they target salt (table salt is iodized and sea salt naturally has iodine in it). So they mean the ingestion of it, not contact from topical iodine.

This thread is really exciting! Who knows if you're reading too much into it, but that's the way things are discovered, right? Good luck everyone!

I'm feeling quite a bit better today. Among other things I took some benadryl last night before bed and that seemed to help some.

Man, this aspergillus is everywhere! I wonder if I'm sensitive to all kinds or just some strains. I was feeling really bad yesterday! And today I have some swollen gland now behind my right jawbone. Don't know if it's related or just means I'm getting a cold. I don't ever remember having this symptom before.

I always get sick (cold, etc) the day before a weekend... my body has good timing, I guess.

Hmmm, Alka Seltzer Gold (Gold is GF) is supposed to help with a gluten reaction...I wonder if it'd help with your reactions?

That's a thought. I've never been an Alka Seltzer fan as I don't like the taste that much but I think I should probably get some anyway. Sounds like good stuff.

I just had a really good weekend - played a bunch of bass (yee-haw!) and found out my brother went and asked his girlfriend's parents permission to ask her to marry him! I'm so excited for him! He was supposed to pop the question this weekend, I know she'll say yes but I haven't heard officially yet... <biting my fingernails>! I'll tell you one thing, I'll need lots of Alka Seltzer Gold because his girlfriend comes from a wealthy Chinese family and there will be lots of official family meals and celebrations going on - at Chinese restaurants. And his girlfriend has already warned me that it's pretty hard to get Chinese restaurants to accomodate a food problem, even if you are fluent so I'm going to be doing a lot of eating ahead of time, and just eating rice... wish me luck now!!! Smile

How wonderful! Maybe the family will surprise you with GF food too! With many dishes you cannot tell the taste from the original, well, I'm not a connosieur of fine Chinese but it's good! I miss the Japanese food at our local mall. They say no MSG but whatever they grill the food on may be contaminated with other ingredients ~ so a NO to that.

good luck dear

I know, it would be awesome to get some special GF Chinese food. I don't think I could get them to go to PF Changs... Very Happy They have their favorite restaurants in San Francisco so we'll probably be there a lot. I see lots of commutes in my future (I live 3 hours away).

I'm so proud of my brother. He's doing so well. I wish him the best.

No date yet!!! I guess he didn't do it this past weekend - the ring is coming on Thurs. Since she is Chinese, there appears to also be some sort of convention of determining the proper date (at least in her family)... so who knows?

I know she's going to say yes... but I'm still really excited!

Jamaica - that is sooooo cool! Are you going?

Interesting...

Yes Peg & I are going...we think...LOL!!

The bride is planning this (thru some travel agent and maybe just the internet) and we're not sure she's covering all the bases. Evidently there are a few hoops to jump thru when having a wedding in Jamaica. OUR travel agent is asking all sorts of questions about certain things like...is the wedding date confirmed from the hotel? She said DO NOT book the trip until this is done. We don't know. She is also planning it for 5 days...this is an odd number...either 4 or 7 days are the usual package stays. Plus there is the issue of my food. I need to call the place (a Holiday Inn) to see what they will do for me. This is a 5 star place (that's top rated) and it's a bit pricey. Good thing it's not until March of 06!!!! LOL

Part of the problem is that we are not in control. We are the ones that usually plan this type of stuff...so it's a little scary for us not knowing all the details.

I completely understand trepidation about not being in control - and even before going GF. When it comes to travel, I am a much happier camper if I'm doing the planning. Sometimes I think I have more fun planning the vacation than I do taking it! Smile

I've only gone on one trip since going GF and it didn't work out so well - I got a miserable virus the day we left and was sick the whole time, plus a few more days when I got back (yep, had to take more days off of work...). I am also pretty sure I got glutened because we had all our meals at my uncle's house and he is a major health food hippy and all food is cooked in cast iron pans. But I was sick already and didn't want to make a big deal.

Anyway, I do wonder what the future holds for me and travel but we are thinking next summer of going to England and a friend of ours here, who is British, just informed us we could use her time-share apartment in Stratford if we'd like which would save us $$$ and mean we could cook my food so that would be great!

I think it will all work out, you still have time, fortunately! My brother hasn't popped the question yet.... maybe next Monday (he has to schedule these things! I guess he is a math teacher...)

Smile
