I will be visiting my in-laws in Orrick, MO from October 1-8. I will be shipping some non-perishable items ahead of me, but do you have any suggestions for restaurants and resources in the area? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Angela,
You might try contacting some people on this list of area support groups. Please check the location of these to make sure they are close to where you're going.

It appears that KC is the closest big city.
I'm sure there's a Walmart near by. Check their Great Value brands products for GF status. _________________ Al

Thanks, I sent an e-mail to the Columbia, MO contact plus a contact through the Celiac Sprue Association in Platte City, MO. We're only going for a week so hopefully I can stay "clean" for that long!

I don't know where Orrick, Mo is located. But if it is near Kansas City, there's a Hyvees on Barry Road that has a great gluten free section.

Orrick is northeast of KC, but I know we will be heading into the city at least once. I love that steamboat Arabia museum and we always make a stop there, so I'll look to see where the Hyvees is. thanks!

We're back in California now, but we found some good places to eat that I thought I'd share. The Ruby Tuesday right outside the KC airport was pretty accommodating, even bringing me a label for a lemon butter sauce that came with the salmon I ordered.
The best meal I probably had was at the Nelson-Atkins museum cafe: spinach salad topped with grilled salmon, fresh mango and strawberries, candied pecans and green goddess-like dressing. They even had a flourless chocolate torte!
An Italian restaurant in Independence called Carrabas (www.carrabas.com) had a gluten-free menu and it was great to find some side dishes with some flavor as well. |
