| I use gluten free vanilla flavoring but I have seen gluten free recipes that just say that vanilla flavoring was used in the recipe. They do not specify that gluten free flavoring was used. Is regular vanilla flavoring, maple, almond flavoring really ok to use? |

| I'm not sure about vanilla flavoring or other flavorings, but I do know of several brands of vanilla extract that are gluten free. In fact, most should be. Also flavoring and extract are two different products. |

| Thanks for the reply concerning vanilla flavoring. Actually, I meant vanilla extract and not vanilla flavoring. I have been using the gluten free vanilla but if certain brands of extract are gluten free, I will use those. I assume that almond extract is ok to use also. |

Yes, I think most extracts are safe for celiacs. Just read the label to be sure.
At one time distilled alcohol was thought to not be GF which is why there is still some question about extracts, booze, etc. |

TEC,do you know...is the alcohol used in _________ extract always distilled? I haven't a clue how it works for that stuff.
We use McCormick Vanilla. They won't hide gluten. If it's there, they will tell you on the label. _________________ Al

You know I don't know. This next sentence is going to sound incredibly stupid. Isn't most alcohol distilled? Off to google... |

Good, I feel less stupid knowing you don't know either. Beer, didn't even think of beer. |

I use Adams vanilla extract. It says right on the box that it is gluten-free. I have actually looked at several of their different extracts that say they are gluten-free. _________________ It only gets better from here. |

I ran in to this in an article in GF Living about Dannon yogurt and their natural flavors [which use ethanol as a base].
| Quote: | | The Renewable Fuels Assoc. says ethanol can be made from any starch or sugar. BUT ethanol is always distilled [per the communications director of the Flavor & Extract Manufacturers Assoc]. |
