I asked Muir Glen if their soups and tomato products were gluten free and I specifically referred to the citric acid. I got this reply which says they list gluten if it's there, but then they say the citric acid is from corn. Does that mean it's gluten free or not?? The email I received is below:
Thank you for contacting Muir Glen regarding gluten in Muir Glen organic diced tomatoes.
It is our goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best to refer to the specific ingredients listed on each product package.
However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or gluten containing ingredients sourced from these grains, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product's ingredient label to provide you with current and accurate information.
Yes, the citric acid in Muir Glen and Cascadian Farm products is corn based; however, the percentage contained is very small. |

Muir Glen has GREAT labeling practices! They will list all gluten bearing grains [by law they only are required to list wheat] - this is a good thing for us. Knowing that...we can look at any of their labels and tell if it's GF or not. If you don't see wheat, barley, rye or oats - you're golden!
Corn itself is GF. Don't be alarmed if you hear Corn Gluten. They are using gluten as a term for a protein storage. Yes, corn does have a protein - it's called zein and safe for celiacs.
Enjoy your GF Muir Glen products!
