|

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong category...I didn't know where to put it.
Okay, first...I don't remember if gluten intolerance is the same thing technically as celiac...I'm thinking I'm remembering it is not the same exact thing, but the treatment is so my mind has lumped them as one.
So now I'm wondering how do you know if you have "just" a wheat intolerance? Does any of the testing find this? Or is that a trial and error kind of thing?
Thanks! |

All celiacs are gluten intollerant, but not all gluten intollernant people have celiac. Celiac disease is charcterized by damage to the villi. People with non-CD gluten sensitivity will have symptoms, but not damaged villi. The treatment is the same - a GF diet.

It is possible to be intollerant to wheat, but that is not CD. One could also have a wheat allergy and not react to other gluten grains. That is also not the same as CD, however, as celiac is an intollerance and not an allergy. If the CD tests are negative, an elimination diet may be indicated to determine what the offending foods are. I would only embark on something like this AFTER completing the CD testing, however. Best not to muddy the waters by eliminating foods before doing the testing.

So, I'm assuming that none of the bloodwork for celiac tells you about wheat only, huh? Guess I was hoping it would! |

Gluten is a general term for the proteins that are present in grain. Celiacs react to similar proteins that are present in several types of grains. These are: gliadin in wheat, horedin in barley, and secalin in rye. None of the CD bloodwork is specific to wheat as celiacs react to barley and rye also. There are other types of testing for wheat intolerance (allergy testing, for example) but that is not celiac.

When I was first figuring this out, I was hoping it was just wheat. I remember it was after Thanksgiving - I made a turkey barley soup...had some for lunch and then went for a walk with my daughter....
Stomach cramps and ill feeling half way into the walk.
That was my gluten test ! |

Yes, thank you. So, if I'm understanding correctly, I would check for CD first, if all that is negative, then perhaps test for a wheat intolerance. Or try the hard way - the way I'm trying to avoid - and eliminate from my diet to find out. I'm okay with the whole diet/lifestyle change IF I know I must. But to change everything to just find out...well, I'd need a whole lot of motivation and support for that! |

Yup, you got it Lotsa! Just remember to stay on a normal diet if you're going to get tested for CD. If you don't care about testing you can start the GF diet any time. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
