Here's some info I've gathered on Maltodextrin.

http://www.clanthompson.com/res_info_lists_show_items.php3?category=Food%20Ingredients&category_id=4

Maltodextrin: Gluten free: Yes. Vegetarian: Yes. Comments: This is prepared as a white powder or concentrated solution by partial hydrolysis of corn starch – potato starch or rice starch with safe and suitable acids and enzymes. It is gluten free when it appears in foods, vitamins, minerals or nutritional supplements.

Celiac.com's Forbidden Food Ingredient list

8 ) Maltodextrin is prepared as a white powder or concentrated solution by partial hydrolysis of corn starch or potato starch with safe and suitable acids and enzymes. (1) Maltodextrin, when listed on food sold in the USA, must be (per FDA regulation) made from corn or potato. This rule does NOT apply to vitamin or mineral supplements and medications.(2) Donald Kasarda Ph.D., a research chemist specializing on grain proteins, of the United States Department of Agriculture, found that all maltodextrins in the USA are made from corn starch, using enzymes that are NOT derived from wheat, rye, barley, or oats. On that basis he believes that celiacs need not be too concerned about maltodextrins, though he cautions that there is no guarantee that a manufacturer won't change their process to use wheat starch or a gluten-based enzyme in the future. (3) - May 1997 Sprue-Nik News
1. Federal Register (4-1-96) 21 CFR. Ch.1, Section 184.1444
2."Additives Alert", an information sheet from the Greater Philadelphia Celiac Support Group, updated early in 1997. This specific information comes from Nancy Patin Falini, the dietitian advisor for the group and a speaker at a national celiac conferences in the past few years.
3. From the CELLIAC Listserv archives, on the Internet, Donald D. Kasarda, posted November 6, 1996.

Q. Does Maltodextrin have Malt in it? Is it OK for gluten free diets?
Mary
A.

Maltodextrin is made from corn. Basically it is starch that has been broken down into smaller molecules, so it is pretty easy to digest. Maltodextrin does not contain malt. Maltodextrin is used as an added ingredient in foods to enhance flavors and texture. It is also found in a lot of nutritional supplements. Maltodextrin doesn't contain any gluten and should be safe for gluten free diets.

Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, "wheat" will be appear on the label. Even in this case, the maltodextrin would be gluten free.”

Well, I just read that food starch is **not** okay, especially "modified" food starch. I think I read it today.

I think I read several things today with conflicting information about what is and isn't safe. This week I'm eating brussel sprouts and potatoes. And grapes.

Hi Celia,

You do have to be careful about the information you read online - from any website [yup - even here. Sometimes mistakes are made. However they usually are caught and corrected Smile]. Over time you learn which information is correct and which is not.

Modified food starch is NOT ALWAYS bad. It can be made from wheat, but not always. With current label laws in place, if the modified food starch contains wheat it must be labeled as such [ie Modified Food Starch (wheat)]. However, the laws do not apply to barely, rye & oats. In this case, you must A) call the manufacturer or B) know the companies labeling practices. If you know they will not hide any gluten helps.

Starch
On a food label, starch always indicates cornstarch. That’s the only certainty. Although usually made from corn, modified food starch can be made from wheat. In pharmaceuticals, both starch and modified food starch can be made from wheat.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit. Smile

Is this part still true?

I looked at a package of sugar free altoids at Trader Joe's yesterday, and here are the ingredients:

Quote:
Sorbitol , Modified Cornstarch , Wheat Maltodextrin , Natural and Artificial Flavor , Magnesium Stearate , Gum Arabic , Sucralose Sweetener

Are Altoids considered a supplement or have the laws changed?
