I am going to Central America for a few weeks and I'm a bit afraid. Shocked Most of the stuff down there is going to be gluten free, but does anyone have any tips?

Don't drink the water (unless it's bottled).
Don't drink anything with ice cubes in it.
Avoid Salads (they rinse the leaves with water).
Stick to bottled beverages and well cooked foods.
Do *not* eat food from any road side venders (no matter how good it looks/smells).
Try to eat in Western Style Hotels or "fancy" restaurants.

Which country are you going to?

Sounds like fun - are you going for vacation? (I've been to El Salvador and Honduras but it was for work so I didn't get to see anything too exciting)

Yeah. My mom wanted me to go to language school, but my dad kinda put a damper on that one... So I don't have to go and learn endless rounds of, nina nino ninos ninas... I do enough of that already.

Daughter of the Light,

I traveled to Hondorus for work before I was dx. We ate at Wendy's and TGIF and at the hotel. Your trip sounds a lot funner. I have thought about going down for vacation to Central America so I would be interested in your report when you get back on how the gf food went and where you did eat.

In the mean time, have a great fun, safe trip!

Thanks! I'll look out and give a report when i get back. The good thing about Central americal is that most of the stuff is GF. I mean, they practically live on corn tortillas and beans and rice. most of the stuff is GF but I'll tell y'all when i get back.

OOOKAY!!!! sry i was so long in doing this. Im sitting here watching a subbed Naruto. FUN! But, the tension is getting me.

Well, As an overview for this, i have to say that Guatamala is a HEAVEN for celiacs except for one thing. they stick Consume, (in english, chicken broth,) in EVERYTHING. well, not in the tortillas, but in the rice and sometimes the beans. YOu must NOT let down your gaurd and ask about everything. But, the good thing is, almost every kitchen will work around you, and you can eat at almost every resturaunt. I dont know about it all, but at the places i went to, it was. This isn't exactly a report, but i'll probably give it in peices as i remember things.

Daughter of Light,
Sounds like you succeeded on the GF food front so that's great. And since it was like "Heaven" you must have had loads of fun. Glad you are safe and sound back off your trip! Very Happy

I was beginning to wonder about you as well! I'm glad you had a good time. Smile Were there any specific Celiac-friendly places? Or were they all pretty good?

Well, the thing is, most of the people had never heard of celiac. Almost no-one. There was one resturaunt in Panajachel that had heard of it and would cook on the side for us. Most of the resturaunts were very flexible. But i do reccommend bringing your own food, (breakfast bars, rice crackers, etc.) for on taxi/bus/car rides, because most of the little stalls make there stuff in mass.
